Mesh – A Persistence Framework For Flex
For awhile now, I’ve been wanting to create a framework at Mixbook for managing how data is sent back and forth from our Flex application to the server. We’ve had [...]
Cairngorm 3 – Modularization
The biggest benefit of modularization we see is often not the reduced initial SWF size, although that is a benefit, but rather the development efficiency and encapsulation of functional areas. A module can be developed, tested and profiled in relative isolation by a small group of developers, and the contracts can be agreed between modules. read more »

AIR for Android and Flex Mobile Resources
I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to present on mobile development using Flex "Hero" and Flash Builder "Burrito" to both an internal audience here at Adobe and to the Boston Flash Platform User Group. There's a lot of ground to cover and in both cases I had to breeze through sections due to a lack of time. Perhaps in the future I will split his session up or offer it as an extended workshop. Anyway, I can't share the slides at this time but I wanted to share the links and resources that I used to help me

Most non-AIR Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) built with Flex run inside Adobe Flash Player which in turn runs inside the browser. LiveCycle Workspace ES2 is one of these applications. Since these applications could potentially handle sensitive customer data, privacy issues … Continue reading →
Flex 4 Fun: The International Tour
The international book tour for Flex 4 Fun began last November in Antwerp, Belgium (the home of diamonds, chocolate, and GUI toolkit programming books). It was a gray a rainy day, which is unusual for Antwerp except for the months between September and June. The tour began as all such things do: parties dripping with scantily-clad programming celebrities, mobs of teeming fans fighting for autographs and shreds of clothing, and all-night hacking orgies. It was unforgettable, it was a blur of over-caffeinated memory, it was ... just another book tour. The tour came to an abrupt end. I can't confirm
as3flobile ScrollViewport and Flex 4 containers? from yeah to eh.
The other day i got an email from Tom Kordys for a little clarification on the as3flobile project and if the ScrollViewport could be used to provide touch scrolling to a DataGroup. My first thought was “no”, then my second thought was “why not?”. The third thought i forget. But then the fourth thought was [...]

I will start off by covering the different chapters this book has and I will end with a final conclusion. The book promises to be “The complete Insider’s Guide to Building State-of-the-Art components with Adobe’s Flex 4 Platform”. That’s quite a promise to live up to, keep reading to find out if it delivers what it promises....(read more)
Speak to Me - an AIR application
My son is half Filipino, so it is important to me that he learn not only English, but also Tagalog, and his birth city's dialect, Kapampangan. That said, Google's, Google Translate is an impressive language tool, and I leveraged it to create an AIR application I call "Speak to Me". I hope this AIR application encourages you, the reader, to look into the Google Translate tool, and entices you to experiment with Adobe AIR and Flex. Here's the "Speak to Me" Adobe AIR application: SpeakToMe.air. The source code is included in the installed application. You will need to install the

I Lvl’d Up: Flash Builder Product Manager
I've been a web developer all of my life. With the exception of a short stint as a Starbucks barista, every job since I was 18 has been related to building a better internet. Last week I announced that I would be stepping down as ColdFusion Product Manager and taking on a new challenge at Adobe. I'm happy to share that my new role will be as the Flash Builder Product Manager. For those of you who don't know me, I'm no stranger to Flash and Flex. I first started developing with Flash back in the dotcom boutique days. I
The “Widget-based Programming Model” for Flex Enterprise Applications
I came across this article on O’Reilly’s InsideRIA site by Moxie Zheng and was surprised to find some similarities between the architecture the author describes and the architecture that I am seeking to create. The good stuff begins under the subtitle about halfway down, labeled “The Architecture”, where Moxie Zheng discusses his use of an [...]
New Enterprise Flex Development Model
This posting is in response to the comment left HERE, which I felt necessitated its own separate post and discussion. Before I start, I must first at least suggest that some research be conducted on Cairngorm, PureMVC, and Fireclay and allow yourself to draw your own conclusions with regard to how they fit into the [...]
Flex and the Enterprise: Making Architectural Decisions
I currently have two very large Enterprise level Flex applications on my plate right now. The first is an overhaul of an already-existing application, where “best practices” and “design patterns” simply was an afterthought. The second application has not been built, as the company is in the process of raising financial support for it. Meanwhile [...]
Article Released in PHP Architect Magazine
My article on working with the new Zend_AMF module, entitled “Flex, Meet Zend” was recently published in the January issue of PHP Architect magazine. Unfortunately, it looks like in order to read it, you have to purchase the PDF version of the January issue for 4.99 from their site. It’s a good article though, and [...]
